CR is used to amplify nucleic acids and thus, among other things, to detect the genetic information of SARS-CoV-2. The virus belongs to the family Coronaviridae and causes Covid-19 disease.
Based on the latest scientific evidence and available clinical data, SARS-CoV-2 has been classified as a 3. groups of biological agents that are classified on the basis of the degree of risk of infection in humans. The virus is spread by human-to-human transmission primarily through droplet infection. Infected droplets are released when the sick person coughs or sneezes, or when he or she speaks rapidly. Since both saliva and mucus are infectious, the virus can also be transmitted from infected surfaces to the body by touching the eyes, nose and mouth. It can survive outside the human body for several days. The incubation period (the time from infection to the appearance of the first symptoms) is 2 to 14 days. Already during the incubation period, an individual can infect other persons. Covid-19 manifests mainly with fever, cough and shortness of breath. In more severe cases, a characteristic X-ray or CT finding of pneumonia is present. Mostly, however, only mild manifestations of the disease are present. A positive finding of the presence of the virus without clinical symptoms is also relatively common. Manifestations of respiratory disease: mild (cough, increased temperature), severe (high fever, choking cough, diarrhea, muscle aches), severe (pneumonia and kidney failure).
Gargling as a method of obtaining biological material is comparable to swabbing the nasopharynx and throat.
Specimens collected are evaluated for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 virus using commonly available procedures as for swab testing. Nucleic acids are isolated and RT-PCR is used to detect the presence or absence of the virus, which remains viable in the transport medium.
Oral and pharyngeal lavage by gargling is a very reliable method of sampling by the patient himself. According to the available data, the results are not statistically different and it is functionally comparable to the smear.
The test is suitable from the age of 10 years (provided the child can perform the act of gargling).
When evaluating a positive result, you will be provided with a CT/CP value as for the smear.
