Caring for a woman after childbirth does not end

  • 06.08.2021

At the outset, we would like to make it clear that all our articles are written in collaboration with experts in the field. This article was written with the active participation of MUDr. Ingrid Valaska, gynaecologist at the FRAIS Institute of Health and Beauty.

Nevertheless, all the information shared here is provided in a general sense and is intended to educate on the subject. Only a doctor who has the opportunity to examine and assess your health based on your medical history and other factors is the best person to talk to about your specific needs and requirements in any area, so always talk to them before making any decisions about your health.

During natural childbirth, there is loosening and internal injuries of the vaginal walls, which take several months to heal. The laser treatment will speed up recovery, eliminate the unpleasant problem of urine leakage and you can once again devote your time to your partner and baby. Because nothing is better for your baby than a satisfied and happy mommy. Almost half of women experience urine leakage during their lifetime. Modern medicine can treat it quickly and painlessly.

Incontinence, unwanted leakage of urine, afflicts women of all ages. The first problems can actually appear shortly after birth. "The weakening of the pelvic floor, whether as a result of childbirth or gynaecological surgery, but also at an older age by a decrease in the level of estrogens, which in the process of natural ageing cause a loss of elasticity and strength of the supporting tissues of the vaginal canal and pelvic floor muscles," explains gynaecologist of the Institute of Health and Beauty FRAIS in Bratislava, MUDr. Ingrid Valaská. Thus, the cause lies in an organic or functional disorder of the lower urinary tract. Obesity, strenuous physical work or a woman's genetic disposition can also play a role in weakening the pelvic floor and thus urine leakage.

Exercise is not enough

In the past, various exercise techniques were used to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, but they were not as effective and the effect was short-lived. "Surgical treatment also has its limits, requiring hospitalisation and convalescence with not always guaranteed expected effects. Modern medicine allows treatment with a vaginal laser," explains the gynaecologist. The goal of urinary incontinence treatment is to cure or relieve stress urinary leakage and mixed urinary incontinence I and II. degrees. "It is a very comfortable, painless, highly effective treatment, with a rapid onset of effect, without the need for anaesthesia, which is performed on an outpatient basis, without the need for convalescence," explains doctor Ingrid Valaská.

In order for the pelvic floor and the closure function of the urethra to function properly, a sufficient amount of collagen and muscular strength are needed. However, collagen degrades and is lost with age, childbirth or physical exertion. If the functionality is already weakened, the trigger for urine leakage can be a simple lifting of a heavier object, sports, but also laughter or sneezing.

What awaits you

The principle of the treatment consists in laser heating of the mucous membrane, which immediately shortens the collagen fibres and starts the formation of new ones. This makes the layer firmer, changes the angle of the urethra and significantly reduces incontinence, respectively. will disappear.

The treatment lasts approximately 20 minutes. "At the Frais clinic we use the YAG laser. A special gynaecological mirror and a laser attachment are introduced into the vagina; the laser beams heat the deep layers of the mucous membrane, which shortens the existing collagen fibres and leads to the formation of new ones," explains gynaecologist Ingrid Valaská. These procedures are not performed by every gynaecologist in Slovakia, the technology and the certificate are required. Although you may feel heat at the treatment site, it is a painless procedure. "Before the treatment itself, however, a gynaecological examination, an assessment of the suitability of this method for the patient, a negative result of an oncocytological smear from the cervix not older than half a year, a negative culture of the vagina and urine not older than 2 weeks are necessary," the doctor points out.

It is also not performed during menstruation, pregnancy or acute inflammatory disease. No long-term recovery or sick leave is required after the procedure. After the treatment, you can go straight back to your normal activities and, after a week, to your intimate life. The result is already visible after the first treatment. To achieve optimal treatment results, it is advisable to repeat the treatment 2 to 3 times at monthly intervals.
