Male circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin. Men undergo it for religious, health, hygiene and aesthetic reasons.
The foreskin is the skin sac that covers the glans penis. Its removal is one of the oldest surgical procedures ever.
The most common reason for circumcision is phimosis, i.e. narrowing of the foreskin, which cannot be fully stretched over the glans. Thus, smegma – a whitish mass containing sloughed epithelial cells, various types of bacteria and their metabolic wastes, especially skatole and indole – substances considered carcinogens – accumulates underneath. With prolonged exposure, they can lead to penile cancer.
In developed countries, an increasing number of men are undergoing circumcision also for its preventive health benefits. Circumcision reduces the risks for both the man and his partner – whether it is sexually transmitted diseases, genital warts, HPV and the risk of cervical cancer, the aforementioned risk of penile cancer, the incidence of bacterial and mycotic vaginitis.
Men undergo circumcision for other reasons as well. They want to relieve premature ejaculation. The delicate skin of the glans thickens after circumcision, the penis becomes less sensitive.
This can lead to an increase in the duration of sexual intercourse. Nor are cases where men choose circumcision for aesthetic reasons rare. After the procedure, sexual abstinence is necessary for about 2-3 weeks.
