Varicocele surgery, also known as varicocelectomy, is a surgical procedure used to remove varicoceles, which are enlarged veins in the testicular area. This procedure is often performed on men who have symptoms associated with varicocele, such as pain, discomfort, or problems with their sperm.
Varicocele surgery
The procedure of varicocele surgery may include:
- 1Local, spinal or general anaesthesia: Patients can be anaesthetised locally, from the base of the spine to general anaesthesia, according to the needs and preferences of the doctor and patient.
- 2Access to veins: The surgeon can access the veins either through a small incision in the groin area (inguinal area) or through an incision in the lower abdominal cavity.
- 3Removal of enlarged veins: After gaining access to the varicocele, the surgeon will remove and repair the enlarged veins.
- 4Closure of the vascular system: after removal of the enlarged veins, the blood vessels near the varicocele are usually closed using a variety of techniques to minimize the risk of recurrence.
